Chapter 36 . Grammatical change
نویسنده
چکیده
Grammatical change is an extremely interesting area but does presuppose some knowledge of grammar. For this reason, if you do not have this knowledge yet, this chapter will work best if you have first familiarised yourself with the terminology discussed in the chapters on grammar, i.e. especially chapters and 5–8. Chapters on grammatical change in traditional textbooks on the history of English or historical linguistics by and large focus on change in morphology (the structure of words) and/or syntax (the structure of phrases and clauses). Some of the most important changes in the history of English can indeed be described in more or less purely structural terms, i.e. without considering meaning very much. Sentences (1–2), below, illustrate object-verb (or OV) constituent order, which was quite frequent in Old English but became less and less common during Middle English, until it was completely lost in the sixteenth century.

Chapter 35 . Semantic change
35.1 Preliminaries This chapter discusses how linguistic expressions may change their meaning over time. Actually the scope is a bit more limited than that, in the sense that here we will only see examples of how words e.g. silly, very change their meaning. The term 'linguistic expressions' includes words, but also larger grammatical constructions. Grammatical constructions e.g. what in p...
متن کاملRemarks on Optimality Theory and Language Change
The present chapter frames Optimality-Theoretic approaches to phonological and morphosyntactic change in the context both of theoretical linguistics and of the questions asked in traditional historical linguistics. Previous traditional, standard generative and OT accounts are discussed, including principles of change invoked (e.g., Transparency Principle, Naturalness Condition, Neutral Ground H...
متن کاملEmergent Functional Grammar for Space
This chapter explores a semantics-oriented approach to the origins of syntactic structure. It reports on preliminary experiments whereby speakers introduce hierarchical constructions and grammatical markers to express which conceptualization strategy hearers are supposed to invoke. This grammatical information helps hearers to avoid semantic ambiguity or errors in interpretation. A simulation s...
متن کاملNeural Network Based Grammatical Learning and its Application for Structure Identification
Structure identification has been used widely in many contexts. Grammatical Learning methods are used to find structure information through sequences. Due to negative results, alternative representations have to be used for Grammatical Learning. One such representation is recurrent neural network. Recurrent neural networks are proposed as extended automata. In this chapter, we first summarize r...
متن کاملSIL Electronic Book Reviews 2007 - 004 Theories of case
That is the way Miriam Butt begins her book. Apparently, she felt that the quote fits her introduction to case theory within grammatical traditions (Latin grammar is one) and their relationship to various notions of case within modern theoretical linguistics. In her introduction to the book, Butt states “...several issues must be dealt with. One is the issue of what “case” really means and what...
